Former Chelsea midfielder, Craig Burley, has predicted that Argentina will defeat Spain in the final of the 2026 World Cup scheduled for Sunday in New Jersey.
The Albiceleste are on an impressive 13-game winning streak in the tournament.
They recently achieved a 2-1 comeback victory against England in the semi-finals held in Atlanta on Wednesday, July 15.
Anthony Gordon’s goal in the second half brought the Three Lions close to victory, just five minutes away, before the Albiceleste scored twice in quick succession to secure their place in the final.
Enzo Fernandez equalized with a long-range assist from Lionel Messi, and substitute Lautaro Martinez completed the turnaround seven minutes later by heading in Messi’s cross.
On the other hand, La Roja comes into the final after a 2-0 win over France in the semi-finals, aiming to claim their second title this weekend.
However, Burley believes that the Albiceleste will thwart those ambitions, stating on ESPN, “The Argentinians will try to get under the skin of the Spaniards even more. I think De Paul will play [ahead of Simeone].
“Sometimes he goes over the edge, but he’s a brilliant player. It was way easier than we expected for Spain against France. I don’t think Argentina will allow the same to happen. Brilliant game, 3-2 to Argentina.”
La Roja secured their only title in 2010 in Johannesburg, South Africa, defeating the Netherlands 1-0 in extra time. Meanwhile, the Albiceleste claimed their third title at Qatar 2022, overcoming the reigning champions France in a penalty shootout.
