Cristiano Ronaldo’s club, Al-Nassr, is reportedly “choking” under a mounting financial crisis that has left the Saudi giant unable to strengthen its roster this summer.

According to Goal, citing Saudi outlet Arriyadiyah, the club’s debts have ballooned to more than 800 million Saudi riyals (roughly $213 million). The crisis has forced the Saudi Public Investment Fund to step in with emergency measures.

The report claims Al-Nassr has effectively frozen new signings until club executives generate more revenue internally, despite already reaching an agreement to sign Real Mallorca midfielder Samu Costa. The PIF has also reportedly brought in consultants to help reduce spending and increase revenue, while also considering offers from potential investors interested in buying a stake in the club.

Al-Nassr’s financial woes did not develop overnight. According to the report by Arriyadiyah, the Saudi Public Investment Fund believes a series of financial decisions made during the 2025-26 campaign pushed the club into its current predicament.

While officials have not disclosed exactly which transactions created the shortfall, the reported response has been sweeping. PIF has allegedly stripped the club’s executive leadership of some of its financial authority and enlisted outside commercial, financial, and legal advisers to review operations.

However, reports suggest the club’s mounting debt has effectively halted transfer business until new revenue is generated, raising fresh questions about whether Ronaldo will receive the reinforcements needed to challenge domestically and in Asia.

Since arriving in late 2022, the multiple-time Ballon d’Or winner won the Saudi Pro League title for the first time last season, finally ending Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal’s stronghold. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is leading an “intense effort” to persuade Fernandes to make the move to Saudi Arabia and reunite with him in Riyadh.

The reported push comes even after Fernandes turned down a lucrative Saudi offer earlier this year, explaining that he still believes he has more to achieve in European football. Still, Al-Nassr is said to remain interested in signing the Man United captain, although the Premier League side has no intention of sanctioning his departure.

Should Ronaldo eventually convince his international teammate to reconsider, it would represent one of the biggest transfer coups in Saudi Pro League history and hand Al-Nassr another marquee name alongside the Portuguese superstar.

The venue holds special significance for Ronaldo, who came through Sporting’s famed academy before making his senior debut there as a teenager and launching one of football’s greatest careers.

The reported plan has yet to be confirmed by either Ronaldo or the Portuguese Football Federation, as The Blast reported. Still, it would provide a symbolic ending for the all-time international appearances and goals leader.
