For years, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s future appeared firmly rooted in California, where they built a new life after stepping away from royal duties.
However, a reported return to the United Kingdom has reignited questions about what is driving the move.
While family ties and lifestyle considerations may be factors, insiders claim the couple’s financial reality is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore as mounting expenses, legal costs, and business pressures continue to reshape their plans.
5According to sources, Prince Harry and Meghan’s decision to relocate to the UK before the end of the month is being influenced partly by financial concerns.
The couple is expected to move with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who have reportedly already been enrolled in schools there.
One insider suggested money is playing a significant role in the decision, telling Page Six, “I am sure there are a lot of reasons [for the move], but I do think cash is a big one.”
Other sources stressed that the Sussexes are not facing financial ruin, noting that the Duke’s inherited wealth remains substantial. “They had more money than most even before Megxit!” one insider remarked.
Even so, maintaining their lifestyle has reportedly become increasingly expensive. The couple continues to carry two mortgages on their $14.5 million Montecito mansion, while also covering the costs of household staff and a vacation property in Portugal.
Harry’s Security Costs And Staffing Changes Have Added Pressure
5The financial demands reportedly extend well beyond real estate. Sources claim Prince Harry and Meghan spend approximately $3 million annually on security alone, a necessity that has remained a major expense since leaving royal life.
As costs have risen, the couple has reportedly taken steps to reduce spending elsewhere. Staff numbers have been dramatically reduced over the years.
While they were once believed to employ as many as 17 or 18 staff members, they are now said to have only four full-time employees, excluding their spokespersons.
Insiders estimate the Sussexes require at least $6 million each year simply to maintain their life in the United States.
Meanwhile, Harry has reportedly devoted much of his energy to philanthropic work, leaving Meghan’s business ventures to generate much of the household income.
According to one source, the business is “doing well,” and the Duchess is expected to continue operating the brand even after relocating to Britain.
Prince Harry Faces Fresh Financial Questions After Court Defeat
5Another major factor hanging over the couple is a potentially costly legal battle. Harry and Meghan have reportedly earned more than $100 million through book deals and agreements with Netflix and Spotify, but a recent court loss could create a significant new financial burden.
Harry recently lost his privacy case against Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail.
The lawsuit included several high-profile claimants, among them Sir Elton John and Elizabeth Hurley.
A costs hearing took place at the end of July, with Associated reportedly seeking up to £34.5 million ($47 million) in legal fees.
While a formal judgment has yet to be issued, Harry could allegedly be responsible for approximately $2.6 million.
Sources previously claimed he does not have that amount readily available. There has even been speculation that Elton John, a longtime friend of Princess Diana, could potentially offer financial assistance if necessary.
Harry’s Return To The UK Raises Fresh Questions About Prince William
5As questions continue to swirl around Prince Harry and Meghan’s reported move back to the United Kingdom, attention has increasingly shifted from finances to family, particularly Harry’s fractured relationship with Prince William.
The brothers, once known for their close bond, have spent years at odds following Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal duties, the couple’s high-profile interviews, and the publication of Harry’s memoir “Spare.”
While there have been signs of a thaw between Harry and King Charles following a recent family gathering at Highgrove House, royal experts believe William presents a far more complicated challenge.
Royal historian Ed Owens told the Associated Press that King Charles is more likely to forgive Harry, partly because of his role as Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
Owens suggested that William may privately struggle to move past what he views as a betrayal, but said public reconciliation could eventually become necessary.
“It may be that privately William never fully forgives his younger brother for what he deems the betrayal of the family,” Owens said. “But publicly, traditional Christian values demand that there is this public act of forgiveness, that there’s reconciliation between the brothers.”
Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Are Not Giving Up Their California Life Completely
5Although Harry and Meghan are reportedly preparing for a new chapter in the UK, their ties to California are far from over.
A recent report from PEOPLE indicates that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have no plans to sell their Montecito mansion, which has served as their primary residence since 2020.
Instead, the property is expected to remain part of the family’s portfolio even after they relocate with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Sources say the couple also intend to keep their vacation property in Portugal, giving them homes on both sides of the Atlantic.
The arrangement would also allow Meghan to maintain business connections in the United States while giving the children an opportunity to spend more time in Harry’s home country.
