Queen Camilla has revealed that she struggled to remain silent about her husband King Charles’ cancer diagnosis before it was made public.
Charles continues to undergo treatment for the undisclosed form of cancer and has had his ever-doting wife by his side, with sources revealing that only she has a magical effect on him.
Camilla was accused of leaking details about the royal family to the press by Charles’ youngest son, Prince Harry.
British Queen Camilla has opened up about the emotional burden of keeping King Charles’ cancer diagnosis a secret from the public prior to the official announcement.
She made the revelation in a short film released on Wednesday to mark the 30th anniversary of a cancer support center run by Maggie’s, of which she is president.
The Queen recounted that it was “quite difficult” not to mention her husband’s ailing health when she visited the charity’s newly opened center at the Royal Free Hospital in London in January 2024.
“I remember coming to see a Maggie’s just after the King’s being diagnosed,” she said, per CNN. “Nobody could say anything at the time. That was quite difficult.”
“I almost said something but, you know, I felt that it wasn’t the time to say,” Camilla noted, adding, “I was just longing to let it out but obviously I couldn’t.”
Camilla Reveals How Charles Refused To Let Cancer Stop Him
4It wasn’t until a few weeks later, in February of that year, that the news was officially announced, following a routine procedure for an enlarged prostate.
Although specific details regarding the type and stage of cancer were withheld, Charles had to take months away from his royal duties to undergo treatment.
In the documentary, Camilla reminisced about how her “poor husband” persevered with his duties despite his health.
“Nothing stopped him. He just said, ‘This is my way. I’m going to cope with it,’” she said.
King Charles Shares ‘Good News’ On His Cancer Treatment
4Meanwhile, Charles has steadily returned to public-facing duties, announcing in December of last year that he responded well to treatment.
In a video message recorded as part of a fundraising collaboration with Cancer Research UK, the ruling monarch shared encouraging news that he was getting much better and advocated for early detection.
“Today I am able to share with you the good news that thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to ‘doctors’ orders’, my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the new year,” Charles said in his speech, per the BBC.
“I know from my own experience that a cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming. Yet I also know that early detection is the key that can transform treatment journeys, giving invaluable time to medical teams,” he continued.
He went further to buttress the need for early diagnosis before expressing how he was moved by the “community of care” that usually surrounds cancer patients.
Prince Harry Once Accused Camilla Of Leaking Royal Secrets
4Camilla previously came under fire for something closely linked to her struggles keeping confidential information private. In his 2023 blockbuster memoir Spare, the King’s son Prince Harry accused her of leaking private conversations to the British press so as to prop up her reputation.
To promote the book at the time, the Duke gave interviews in which he accused members of the royal family of getting “into bed with the devil” to secure favorable tabloid coverage.
He particularly singled out Camilla, whom he claimed was doing so to furnish her image before the public, following years of coverage about her affair with Charles.
“That made her dangerous because of the connections that she was forging within the British press,” he told CBS. “There was open willingness on both sides to trade information. And with a family built on hierarchy, and with her on the way to being queen consort, there was gonna be people or bodies left in the street.”
Camilla Has A ‘Magical Effect’ On Charles
4Regardless, the Queen has gracefully moved on from those accusations and remained a supportive figure for her husband.
So much so that royal author Catherine Mayer claims Camilla has the power to lift His Majesty’s spirits when the going gets tough.
In her book, Divide & Rule, Mayer explained that the Queen has an almost instantaneous “transformative” influence on Charles’s mood, noting how he visibly perks up when he sees her.
“With Camilla, you only need to see her and Charles together to understand that she has this … magical effect on him. It’s transformative,” she writes.
She went further to explain that Camilla’s influence on Charles is especially noticeable when he’s stressed, writing, “You would see him tired, very obviously out of sorts. And then she would come into a room, and he would light up. She just lifts him.”
