The singer issued a lengthy statement of his own as a reaction to the rumors by sharing an article that argued a simple look at the timeline effectively ruled him out. Panettiere had recalled waking up on a yacht at 18 beside a strange, sparsely dressed man, who fit the exact description of the singer.
It did not take long for internet users to connect the dots and point at Blunt after old pictures surfaced of Panettiere and Blunt spending time on a boat. The singer kept his words very brief, but let a Substack article from journalist Dean Piper titled “Hayden Panettiere and James Blunt – An Internet Lynching,” do the talking.
The article challenged the growing theory as Piper recalled covering Blunt and the actress at a 2009 amfAR event in Cannes, who appeared very flirtatious, attended an after-party, and lounged on a boat the next day. Panettiere was 19 at the time, while her memoir says the yacht encounter happened when she was 18.
As shared by Page Six, Piper also noted that Panettiere described fleeing and avoiding the unnamed man afterward, unlike her friendly public interactions with Blunt. Piper believes these inconsistencies effectively rule the singer out.
