Meghan Markle has offered a rare glimpse at Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet’s emotional connection to the grandmother they never had the opportunity to meet. The Duchess of Sussex shared a new family photo believed to have been taken at Althorp, the sprawling estate where Princess Diana grew up and was later laid to rest. With Prince Harry and Archie carrying large bouquets in the image, the photo has fueled speculation that the family privately visited Diana’s burial site during its recent return to the U.K.
4Meghan posted a collection of new photographs on Instagram on Thursday, July 23, captioning the carousel simply, “Summer Holiday.”
One image shows Harry, Archie, and Lilibet walking away from the camera along a grassy path bordered by trees and carefully maintained hedges. The photograph is believed to have been captured at Althorp, the Spencer family’s ancestral estate in Northamptonshire.
Harry and his 7-year-old son can each be seen carrying a large bouquet. Although Meghan did not disclose where they were headed, the flowers prompted speculation that the family may have been visiting Diana’s grave.
The late Princess of Wales is buried on a private island in the middle of the estate’s Oval Lake.
Prince Archie And Princess Lilibet Visit Their Grandmother’s Family Home
The visit gave Archie and 5-year-old Lilibet an opportunity to experience a place deeply connected to their late grandmother. Diana spent part of her childhood at Althorp before her 1981 marriage. She died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, when Harry was 12 years old.
The Sussexes reportedly stayed at the 13,000-acre estate as guests of Harry’s uncle, Charles Spencer, during their recent U.K. trip. They are also believed to have spent time with other members of the Spencer family.
While the children never met Diana, Harry has consistently sought to preserve his mother’s memory within his own family. The apparent Althorp visit offered Archie and Lilibet a private connection to both Diana’s childhood and her final resting place.
Princess Diana’s Grave Was Designed To Remain Private
4Diana’s burial site is not accessible to members of the public. Charles Spencer previously explained that the grave’s isolated location was deliberately selected to protect his sister’s resting place. In his book, he wrote that the lake “[acting] as a buffer against the interventions of the insane and ghoulish, the thick mud presenting a further line of defense.”
The location also allows William and Harry to visit their mother away from cameras and public attention. “I think it’s very important for them to be there with her,” Charles previously told PEOPLE. “It is, luckily, very tranquil here, and they can come and go as they wish whenever they want. And that’s very lovely for me to know that.”
Speculation about a Sussex family visit began before Meghan posted the photograph. Althorp’s website had reportedly noted that the estate would be closed to visitors on July 10 and 11, coinciding with the family’s time in the U.K.
Archie And Lilibet Reunited With King Charles

However, Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet did travel to the country, and their visit included a long-awaited reunion with King Charles and Queen Camilla. The reunion marked a notable moment for Charles, who had not seen his California-based grandchildren since 2022.
Prince Harry Previously Brought Meghan To Diana’s Grave
4This was not Meghan’s first visit to Althorp. In his 2023 memoir, “Spare,” Harry recalled bringing his wife to Diana’s burial site in 2022, on the 25th anniversary of his mother’s death.
As the couple traveled by boat across the lake, Harry said he “gazed around at Althorp’s rolling fields and ancient trees, the thousands of green acres where my mother grew up, and where, though things weren’t perfect, she’d known some peace.”
Harry admitted that the experience was not “easy,” but he wanted to introduce Meghan to the place where his mother rests. “At long last, I was bringing the girl of my dreams home to meet mum,” he wrote.
Years later, the new family image suggests Harry may now have shared that meaningful place with Archie and Lilibet, extending Diana’s legacy to another generation.
