Perez Hilton’s family is still searching for answers weeks after the celebrity blogger was hospitalized following a disturbing livestream that shocked followers and prompted an emergency response.
While the 48-year-old continues receiving treatment and recovering from significant physical injuries, those closest to him say the deeper question of what triggered the incident remains unresolved.
As family members focus on his recovery, they admit they still do not fully understand what led to the crisis that unfolded inside his Miami home.

In the weeks following the August 4 incident, much of the attention has centered on Perez Hilton’s physical condition.
Speaking recently on “The Perez Hilton Podcast with Chris Booker,” Hilton’s brother-in-law, Tom, explained that physical recovery remained the immediate priority for much of the month.
He added that some of the health complications also involved lingering issues related to Hilton’s previous battle with life-threatening sepsis.
With those concerns beginning to stabilize, the family’s focus has started to shift. “So, we are now just transitioning into the mental side of things,” Tom explained per PEOPLE, noting that psychiatrists had continued checking on Hilton throughout his hospitalization to ensure his safety.
Hilton’s Loved Ones Still Don’t Know What Triggered The Crisis
Despite ongoing treatment, the central question surrounding Perez Hilton’s condition remains unanswered.
According to his family, no definitive explanation has emerged for what Tom described as a mental break.
“The actual healing, or digging into what caused this mental break as I’ve called it, hasn’t been discovered,” Tom said, adding, “I don’t know if it will ever be.”
The uncertainty has fueled speculation online, including theories that the blogger may have experienced “sepsis psychosis” following his earlier medical struggles. However, Tom stressed that no such diagnosis had been confirmed by medical professionals.
For now, family members appear more concerned with Hilton’s long-term recovery than finding immediate explanations. Tom revealed that Hilton is currently “lucid,” though they have largely avoided detailed conversations about the events of August 4.
“I don’t know how much he does or doesn’t recall,” he said, explaining that the family intentionally avoided discussions that could potentially “trigger any anxiety for him.” Instead, they plan to address those questions later in a treatment setting focused specifically on his mental health.
Perez Hilton Has Not Yet Reunited With His Children During Treatment
One of the most emotional aspects of Hilton’s recovery involves his three children, Mario, Mia, and Mayte.
The children had been living with Hilton and his mother in Miami after he relocated there following emergency surgery for sepsis, a move that Tom described as understandable given the support network of relatives and close friends nearby.
According to Tom, Hilton’s children, sister and niece had been inside the home shortly before the livestream began. They fled the property after his sister discovered him harming himself in the bathroom.
Since entering treatment, the father of three has not been able to see his children because they are not permitted inside the area where he is receiving care.
Communication has also been limited, with Hilton making calls to family members from a nurse’s station because electronics are not allowed in his room.
Tom also addressed Hilton’s state of mind during the incident, saying, “He thought he was doing what was best for the children … At that time, that’s what he thought.”
The family has since reassured him otherwise. “His kids adore him, and he’s been a present father,” Tom said.

Hilton Granted Supervised Visits With His Children As Family Prioritizes Stability
As Perez Hilton’s family continues trying to understand what led to his reported mental health crisis, attention is also turning to how the blogger reconnects with his three children.
As The Blast reported, recent court filings revealed that Hilton had finally been granted supervised visitation rights while his mother, Teresita Lavandeira, maintained temporary custody of the kids.
According to the court documents, any visits must be supervised by either an approved family member or a therapist.
Hilton must also receive psychiatric clearance before the visits can take place. The arrangement was reportedly agreed to by Hilton and will remain in effect unless modified by the court or by a future filing from his mother.
The temporary custody order gives Teresita responsibility for the children’s education, medical care, and day-to-day needs while Hilton continues his recovery. The custody case has also been sealed, with reports indicating the decision was made to protect the children’s privacy.
Even as Hilton remains hospitalized, his family is making sure the celebrity blogger’s digital empire does not go dark.
In a statement posted to PerezHilton.com on August 17, relatives announced that the site would officially resume publishing content after briefly pausing operations following Hilton’s medical emergency earlier this month.
The family paired the announcement with an update on Hilton’s condition, writing, “At this time, Perez remains hospitalized and is receiving the medical care he needs.”
They added, “His treatment is continuing in an inpatient setting under the care of a dedicated team of medical and mental health professionals.”
While stressing that Hilton’s health “remains the priority,” relatives confirmed that new content would once again begin appearing across the website and its affiliated social media channels.
Prior to the announcement, Hilton’s sister, Barbara Lavandeira, had explained that the family intended to keep the platform active despite his absence.
“His absence will definitely affect how much news we’re able to publish, but we’re focused on continuing operations and covering as many of the biggest entertainment stories as we can while he’s unable to participate in creating content,” she told Page Six.
Barbara also emphasized how much the site meant to her brother, adding, “Mario created his website alone and has dedicated much of his life to it. It’s his passion.”
