Sandra Oh Says ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Exit Was A ‘Real Gift’

Sandra Oh is not a woman who regrets!

The sensational actress recently doubled down on her decision to leave the beloved “Grey’s Anatomy” series, explaining that she left the show without any grievances.

Sandra Oh became a fan favorite on the ABC medical series as Dr. Cristina Yang. She played the role from 2005 until 2014, leaving after ten seasons in what she described as a “real gift.”

Oh took fans down memory lane in a new podcast appearance, recalling the moment she chose to walk away from “GA” at the height of its fame. She spoke without regret, claiming she left because she felt it was time for a new chapter. In her words:

“I felt very much like I did my job. I really did my job. I feel like I created a full character. I feel I grew the character over 10 years’ time, where it’s a believable growth.”

Oh told Jesse Tyler Ferguson on his “Dinner’s On Me” podcast that she felt like her character had grown after ten seasons and let her go rather than forcing her story. The best part for the actress was having the opportunity to conclude her role with grace instead of a hasty send-off.

Oh explained that the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, gave her time to think about her next step, noting she pulled her aside during renegotiations after season eight or nine. When asked what she wanted to do, the actress asked for time to think.

She noted she took her time pondering her next step and ultimately decided to end her role in “GA.” Oh was then given the opportunity to conclude Dr. Yang’s story and remains grateful to the creator and writers for their support, saying:

“I know that it’s extremely rare to have. That was a real gift.”

The Show Kept Sandra Oh’s Character Alive

The common exit trope in shows when an actor leaves is to kill off the character or replace the actor. In Oh’s case, the show sent Dr. Yang to Switzerland as the head of a new research hospital. She echoed similar sentiments about having the opportunity to give the role a proper goodbye in 2025.

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Oh expressed gratitude for her “beautifully” planned exit. “It also gave me time to move the audience with me to say goodbye to this character and wish her well,” she said, adding that it made her happy to see Dr. Yang still exists in the “GA” universe.

Since her exit, the show has kept the character alive and sometimes used her in scenes through text messages and other written correspondence on screen. Because her character still exists and remains a fan-favorite, Oh confessed that it sometimes made her contemplate returning to the show.

More About The Entertainer’s Exit From The Medical Drama Series

Oh became a part of the “GA” universe in 2005 when the ABC series premiered. She concluded her journey on the show in 2014 following season 10, confirming her exit in a heartfelt statement. E! News covered the story, reporting that she announced her departure a year before it happened.

“It’s been a great privilege to play the character of Cristina Yang on GA, and I am both sad and excited to see where this, her final season, will take her,” Oh raved in her statement. She noted her exit was fully supported by the show’s creator, Rhimes, and the writers before expressing her gratitude.

According to Oh, it was rare for an actor to grow a character “so fully” and “so completely,” and she couldn’t help but thank everyone at “GA” for the opportunity. Rhimes echoed similar sentiments of love, claiming one of the best days of her life as a writer happened the day Oh auditioned for the series.

Although Oh was full of love and gratitude after leaving the ABC series, there was one thing she had a hard time enduring. During a 2021 appearance on NBC News’ Sunday “Today With Willie Geist,” she reflected on the challenges she faced after rising to fame.

According to the actress, becoming famous for her role on the medical drama series was “traumatic” because she lost her anonymity. She explained that her job required a lot of privacy, but that went out the window with the show’s popularity.

Oh claimed the attention got so bad she needed professional help because she could not go out and would hide in restaurants. Fortunately, she found a good therapist who taught her how to stay grounded, “and a lot of times that’s by saying no.”
