The US president recently met with 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai, who nearly drowned after being swept away by intense waves along the California coast before being rescued by 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams.
Donald Trump’s comments from the meeting have since circulated widely online, with critics picking apart his blunt admission that he probably would not have jumped in to save the boy himself.

10-year-old Nathaniel Rai recently went from battling dangerous waves on the California coast to sitting inside the Oval Office with the president.
Dressed in a sharp dark suit and a maroon tie, the young boy sat on a gold couch next to his father and Trump, while across the room sat 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams, whose dramatic viral rescue video brought both families to Washington.
While reflecting on the intense footage, Trump praised the teenager before turning to the young survivor with a surprising joke.
“He’s a real hero,” the president noted, adding, “I don’t know if I’d do it. I wouldn’t, probably. You’re lucky I wasn’t on the service that day.”
“It’s an amazing thing, and he is a real lucky guy, too,” he continued, pointing at Rai. “God was watching you, right? Great.”
Trump hosted the special meeting on Monday, August 17, after publicly declaring that the heroic teenager deserved a civilian honor.

Although Trump appeared to be joking in an effort to highlight the danger of the situation and the survivor’s incredible luck, his comments quickly circulated online and triggered intense backlash.
One viral post on X picked out the president’s remarks, while claiming that the child did not look amused by the politician’s quip.
“Their facial expressions don’t lie. What a messed up thing to say,” the individual wrote in the post, which now has over 30,000 likes on the platform and more than half a million views.
A harsh critic noted, “What an evil, cruel, horrible, disgusting, unacceptable thing to say to a 10 year old boy who almost drowned. I call him sh-tler for this very reason; he’s the anti-Christ.”
Another commented, “He literally just summed up his entire presidency in that one comment. He is the lifeguard of the country, unfortunately, and he ain’t coming to save anyone but himself.”
“I question ALL PARENTS who take their children around Trump. I don’t care what’s happening. He’s a horrible person, and they’re exposing their children to hate,” one more person said.

Amid the flood of criticism, many defenders stepped up to clarify that Trump was simply joking, with some noting that a man of his age truly could not have braved such dangerous conditions to save the child anyway.
One supporter wrote, “It’s a joke. Trump is simply admitting he couldn’t have done it. You people are STUPID!”
Another said, “Trump said he didn’t have the experience or expertise to save people out in the water like that. Duh!!”
A third person commented, “Oh my goodness, he was obviously joking! You think an 80-year-old man could have done what the 16-year-old did?”
“He’s joking. Of course he wouldn’t. He’d die. Shoot.. I’d die, and I’m only 50. Y’all take him too seriously and have no sense of humor cause you HATE HIM. lol,” one more person said.
The President Previously Came Under Scrutiny For Joking About A Little Girl’s Height
This is not the first time the president has faced public scrutiny over a lighthearted remark involving a child guest at the White House.
Back in May 2026, Trump drew widespread internet backlash after commenting on a young girl’s height during an event marking the launch of the Presidential Physical Fitness Youth Challenge.
After learning the young girl played volleyball, Trump playfully questioned if she was tall enough to smash the ball or jump high.
He then suggested that soccer might be a better sport for her, sparking an immediate online debate over whether the exchange was an innocent joke or an awkward public insult directed at a child.
The recent backlash comes amid growing scrutiny over the president’s close bond with his 35-year-old executive assistant, Natalie Harp.
The former news anchor has suddenly been thrust into the national spotlight following a viral campaign speech by Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff, who publicly questioned why Trump prioritizes traveling with Harp over his official presidential duties.
The media storm has quickly intensified due to the leak of deeply emotional letters Harp wrote to Trump calling him her “guardian and protector in this life,” alongside revelations that she managed highly sensitive data despite initially resisting standard federal background checks for over a year.
Trump has yet to directly address the speculations, but his close allies have released statements urging the media to focus on Harp’s undeniable loyalty and hard work rather than fueling baseless rumors about her relationship with the commander-in-chief.
