Turkey: Galatasaray manager, Buruk approves Osimhen’s row as new captain

Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk has expressed his intention to appoint Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen as one of the club’s new captains for the 2026/2027 season.

Osimhen, who made a permanent move to the Turkish champions last summer, enjoyed an exceptional season and was instrumental in Galatasaray’s successful defence of the Super Lig title.

The Super Eagles forward consistently delivered in crucial moments, scoring 22 goals and providing eight assists in 33 matches across all competitions, establishing himself as one of the team’s key players.

His performances, leadership qualities and dedication have endeared him to Galatasaray fans, prompting Buruk to consider giving the Nigerian an even more significant role within the team following changes in the club’s leadership structure.

According to Le Marca Sports, the Galatasaray manager acknowledged the challenge of replacing former long-serving captain Fernando Muslera, emphasizing that Osimhen has the attributes needed to help fill that leadership void.

“Replacing Muslera was difficult for us. He had a strong influence in the dressing room,” Buruk said.

“We aim to entrust Victor Osimhen with responsibility. It will be crucial for him to be among the new captains we select.”

Buruk’s remarks highlight the high regard in which Osimhen is held at Galatasaray and further underscore his growing importance to the team following Mauro Icardi’s exit.
