Lamine Yamal returned to Spain a world champion, but the teenage star’s triumphant homecoming was marred by racist abuse from some of the very fans celebrating the country’s victory. The ugly scenes saw his Spanish identity questioned just days after he helped deliver his nation football’s biggest prize.
Sadly, the abuse back home was simply the latest in a wave of racist and Islamophobic attacks that have followed Yamal throughout the 2026 World Cup and before.
Lamine Yamal returned home a world champion after helping Spain conquer football’s biggest stage, but the teenager’s victory lap was soured by an ugly reception from a section of his own country’s supporters.
Amid the celebrations of their historic triumph, Yamal was reportedly targeted with racist taunts questioning the very Spanish identity he had just represented on the world stage.
According to Argentine outlet TN, a viral video captured spectators shouting “moro,” “fuera moro” and “no es español” as Yamal took to the stage during Spain’s title celebrations.
“Moro,” historically translated as “Moor,” can be used as a derogatory term targeting people of North African or Arab descent. The abuse appeared to reference Yamal’s Moroccan heritage through his father, despite the Barcelona star being born in Spain.
Yamal Was A Major Target Of Racist Abuse At The World Cup
Unfortunately, the ugly scenes Yamal faced back home were just the most recent in a string of racist abuse he has endured during his World Cup campaign.
Spain’s Observatory on Racism and Xenophobia revealed that it detected 40,861 pieces of hate speech and discriminatory content online in June, with the tournament helping drive a surge in racist and Islamophobic posts.
The government body noted a “significant presence” of messages targeting players over their origins and identity, singling out Yamal as one of the principal targets.
People of North African origin were targeted in a staggering 88% of the hate messages analyzed.
The Barcelona star had already been subjected to abuse earlier in the tournament after performing the Muslim prostration, or sujūd, while celebrating his goal against Saudi Arabia.
Lamine Yamal Previously Hit Out At ‘Ignorant And Racist’ Anti-Muslim Chants
Yamal previously made his feelings clear after anti-Muslim chants overshadowed Spain’s April friendly against Egypt in Barcelona.
The teenage protege was on the pitch as sections of the RCDE Stadium crowd sang, “whoever does not jump is a Muslim,” with the chant heard repeatedly during the first half.
Although Yamal acknowledged the abuse was aimed at Egypt rather than him personally, he refused to brush it aside.
“Using religion as something to mock people in a football stadium leaves you as ignorant and racist people,” he wrote on social media, per The Athletic.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) had attempted to stamp out the chanting during the match, displaying anti-discrimination warnings and issuing an announcement at halftime. When the chant resurfaced later, much of the stadium responded with boos and whistles. “Football is to enjoy and support,” Yamal added, “not to offend people by who they are or what they believe in.”
Police Investigated Anti-Muslim Chants At Spain Match
In the aftermath of the ugly scenes, Barcelona police launched an investigation that could ultimately see the incident treated as a hate crime.
According to The Athletic, the Mossos d’Esquadra began working with the city’s public prosecutor’s office, while the RFEF’s security chief cooperated with investigators. A judge will determine whether the evidence meets the threshold for prosecution under Spanish hate-crime laws.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also weighed in, branding the chants “unacceptable” and insisting they “must not happen again.”
“We cannot allow an uncivilized minority to tarnish the reality of Spain — a tolerant country of many,” he said.
Lamine Yamal Silences His Doubters With World Cup Glory
Before conquering the world with Spain, Yamal admitted there was another source of motivation driving him: proving his doubters wrong.
Speaking to FIFA ahead of the tournament, the exciting youngster acknowledged the scrutiny that followed his meteoric rise, including claims that he was “over-rated” or destined to be a “one-season wonder.”
Rather than being weighed down by the criticism, Yamal said he relished answering it on the pitch.
“I love it when people doubt me,” he said. “It’s a motivation to prove them wrong.”
Two months later, the teenager could hardly have delivered a bigger response. Yamal played a starring role as Spain marched through the tournament before beating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final, allowing him to call himself a world champion at just 19 years old.
